Manolis Aggelakis and Antonis Livieratos have been friends for twenty-five years, or, if you prefer, a quarter of a century. During this by no means insignificant period, they have collaborated many times on stage and in the studio. They both have, for example, participated in each other's solo albums, and they were also founding members of Illegal Operation.
"Distance/No Distance" is the first album they co-sign as a duo. It consists of four long, approximately ten-minute tracks, in three of which the sole sound sources are an electric guitar (Aggelakis) and an organ (Livieratos). In the fourth, a second guitar has been added and the organ has been replaced by an electric piano and a synth. Since the overall result is too noisy to be classified as ambient and too "atmospheric" to be labeled as noise, the term ambient/noise has been chosen (whatever that may mean).
The artists themselves write:
"In the spring of 2020, during the first lockdown due to Covid-19, we found ourselves in an unprecedented situation. One of its main features was that while we could still communicate via a long video call with someone in another country (or even another continent), it was suddenly completely impossible to meet and hug our loved ones, even if they were just a few kilometers away. This forced us to accept that the word "distance" would henceforth have a different meaning from what it had in our lives up to that point. This album is, in a way, the soundtrack of our realization process of this enormous change."

Ο Μανώλης Αγγελάκης και ο Αντώνης Λιβιεράτος είναι φίλοι εδώ και εικοσιπέντε χρόνια. Ένα τέταρτο του αιώνα, αν προτιμάτε. Σε αυτό το, διόλου ευκαταφρόνητο, διάστημα έχουν συνεργαστεί μεταξύ τους πολλές φορές στη σκηνή και στο στούντιο. Έχουν, για παράδειγμα, συμμετάσχει ο καθένας σε προσωπικά άλμπουμ του άλλου, ενώ ήταν και οι δυο ιδρυτικά μέλη των Illegal Operation.

Το Distance/No Distance είναι το πρώτο άλμπουμ που συνυπογράφουν ως ντούο. Πρόκειται για ένα άλμπουμ που αποτελείται από τέσσερα μεγάλα, περίπου δεκάλεπτης διάρκειας, κομμάτια στα τρία εκ των οποίων οι μοναδικές ηχητικές πηγές είναι μία ηλεκτρική κιθάρα (Αγγελάκης) κι ένα όργανο (Λιβιεράτος). Στο τέταρτο έχει προστεθεί μια δεύτερη κιθάρα και το όργανο έχει δώσει τη θέση του σε ένα ηλεκτρικό πιάνο κι ένα synth. Μια και το συνολικό αποτέλεσμα είναι πολύ θορυβώδες για να χαρακτηριστεί ambient και πολύ “ατμοσφαιρικό” για να βαφτιστεί noise προτιμήθηκε ο χαρακτηρισμός ambient/noise (οτιδήποτε κι αν μπορεί να σημαίνει αυτό).

Οι ίδιοι οι μουσικοί γράφουν:
“Την άνοιξη του 2020, στη διάρκεια του πρώτου lockdown εξαιτίας της Covid-19, βρεθήκαμε να ζούμε σε μια πρωτόγνωρη κατάσταση. Ένα απ’ τα βασικά της χαρακτηριστικά ήταν πως ενώ συνεχίζαμε να μπορούμε να επικοινωνήσουμε μέσω μιας μεγάλης σε διάρκεια βιντεοκλήσης με έναν άνθρωπο που βρισκόταν σε μιαν άλλη χώρα (ή και μιαν άλλη ήπειρο) ήταν, ξαφνικά, παντελώς αδύνατο να συναντήσουμε και ν’ αγκαλιάσουμε τους αγαπημένους μας, ακόμα κι αν βρισκόντουσαν λίγα, μόλις χιλιόμετρα μακριά μας. Αυτό μας ανάγκασε να αποδεχτούμε πως η λέξη “απόσταση” θα είχε στο εξής διαφορετικό νόημα από εκείνο που είχε στη διάρκεια της μέχρι τότε ζωής μας. Αυτό το άλμπουμ είναι, κατά κάποιον τρόπο, το soundtrack της διαδικασίας συνειδητοποίησης από μεριάς μας αυτής της τεράστιας αλλαγής.”

To Distance/No Distance κυκλοφορεί σε CD και Digital Album από την Same Difference Music και διανέμεται από την Inner Ear.
